The River Terrapin
Breeding Centre |
|
|
Among the most popular destinations
with visitors to Perak Tengah (Central Perak), the project was set up by
the Wildlife Parks and Game Protection authorities (PERHILITAN) in order
to prevent the extinction of this freshwater species of
tortoise.
Located at Bota Kanan, visitors can see the hatcheries and find out more
about the habitats of this riverine terrapin (Batagur Baska).
Normally they will come up to lay eggs on the sandy beaches of the Perak
River around this area between November - March of each year.
They
bury their eggs between 3 - 4 feet into the sandy beaches for
protection and warmth.
The moment they are hatched, baby terrapins, as if by instinct head
straight for the river and they will not be back until they are about to
lay their eggs in the sandy riverbanks.
